WELCOME TO THE DEVILS PLAYGROUND!
presented by the Devils Backbone Brewing Co. in Nelson County, Virginia.


We are THE off-cambered adventures of the award-winning Devils Backbone Brewing Co. called the Devils Playground. Our sports have included Mountain Biking and Trail Running. But you never know what we could do next with the surroundings we have up here in Nelson County. Our events are meant to challenge competitors of all ages and abilities. We embrace the work/reward philosophy by complimenting our events with other weekend activities or post race gatherings at the Brewery.

Our first race was back in 2009 with the dB Challenge Mountain Bike Race. The trails for our mountain bike races are about 2 miles down Highway 151 on Horseshoe Mountain. Horseshoe Mountain is a fascinating place. The mountain highest point is about 2,000 feet. From the highway to the top, a series of double and singletrack trails twist and turn you to the top. Again in a work/reward fashion, once reaching the top, you are rewarded with fun and sometimes challenging singletrack descents.

What makes our cross country mountain bike races unique is the use of paved road! The owner of the Brewery, Steve, wanted the race to start/finish at the Brewery. NO PROBLEM! So, we work with the Nelson County Sheriffs Department to escort our riders as they roll out of the Brewery and hit the climb up Highway 151 called Brents Gap. After the 1.8 mile climb up a 7% grade, the riders arrive at the trail head of Horseshoe Mountain. Brents Gap is also used to descend back to the finish at the Brewery. This makes for quite the finish as riders bomb back down to the Brewery Finish Line...

Our Trail Runs began in 2011 with the Mountain Mayhem that became part of the Devils Playground. Up until the 2012 Trail of Terror, all of our trail runs were held on Horseshoe Mountain also. With the success of the Trail of Terror, we will now start to embrace the trails around the Devils Backbone Brewery Basecamp. This should make for some more fun and challenging events in the future!
